Apple’s Continuity Camera feature allows Mac users to use their iPhone as a webcam during video calls. This feature is seamlessly integrated into the Apple ecosystem and it goes without saying that this is the best implementation we’ve seen so far. However, nothing like this is available for Windows and Android users. We are talking about native support here. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a tutorial for it.
Long before Apple came up with the Continuity Camera feature, Android and Windows users could use their smartphones as a webcam using third-party apps and online tools. And if you want to use your smartphone as a webcam on your Windows device as well, here’s how you can do it. Just keep in mind that most video calling and conferencing apps these days are available on both Android and iOS devices, you can also call directly with your phone and use its camera as a webcam.
what you will need
If no native support is available, third-party applications and services are required. In addition, you will need some cables, a Wi-Fi connection and more.
Privacy concerns
Not all third-party apps are created equal. Some claim to keep your data private and secure, while some don’t talk much about privacy features. So choose the one you trust. We’ll list a few names for you.
Tools that are available
There is no shortage of such applications and services. Some of them are Reincubate Camo, Droid cam, VibeCam, Smart Cam, etc. Be sure to check privacy and security before using these apps and services.
How to set up and use your smartphone as a webcam
Regardless of the app or service you choose, the setup process remains pretty much the same. The only difference may be in logging into apps and services, some may ask to connect using a cable and so on.
To get started, you will need to download the app on your smartphone as well as your laptop or computer.
Then sign in if asked and then follow the on-screen instructions such as the connection method and other settings you need to change.
Once both your phone and laptop are connected through the app, launch the video conferencing app and go to Settings. Here, change your preferred camera settings to the name of the app.
Once done, your phone is now connected to the webcam. Just attach it to a tripod or stand and start video calling.
